Very little rhenium exists in the earth's curst, and it is one of the very rare metals. It has conventionally been used as a reforming catalyst in gasoline production, but, in recent years, demand as a component of heat-resistant alloys used for jet engines, etc., is expanding due to its superior heat-resistant characteristics.
