Sumitomo Metal MiningCorporate Profile19The Toyo Smelter & Refinery has actively pursued the recovery of valuable metals from recycled raw materials including copper scrap, copper sludge (secondary materials containing copper), and e-scrap (scrap circuit boards from electronic equipment), and approximately one quarter of electrolytic copper production derives from these raw materials. We aim to achieve a recycled copper volume of 140,000 tons (approximately 30%) by 2030.Since 2017, we have been recovering and reusing the copper and nickel contained in LIBs through a process that combines the pyrometallurgical copper smelting processes of the Toyo Smelter & Refinery and the hydrometallurgical refining processes of the Niihama Nickel Refinery. The recovered nickel is processed into a secondary battery cathode material at the Isoura Plant, which has allowed us to realize “battery to battery” horizontal recycling using materials recovered from used LIBs. By 2026, we plan to complete and begin operation of a recycling plant with a processing capacity of 10,000 tons of LIB cells per year.With the aim of promoting biodiversity preservation initiatives and maintaining our record of zero significant environmental accidents, SMM engages in environmental preservation through initiatives such as global warming countermeasures (expansion of the low-carbon products business, CO2 emissions reduction, and renewable energy use), minimizing the emission of chemical substances, and forestation.We strive to foster a culture of safety by ensuring all employees cultivate a safety-conscious mindset and necessary safety skills, so that they themselves strive to ensure safety and improve the working environment in their respective roles.SMM conducts necessary awareness activities to equally protect the human rights of our employees and stakeholders, while monitoring the situation and taking prompt and appropriate actions.
