The Philippine Coral Bay Nickel Corporation and the Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation win the 2021 Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award

Coral Bay Nickel Corporation (CBNC) and Taganito HPAL Nickel Corporation (THPAL), subsidiaries of Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd., have received the “2021 Presidential Mineral Industry Environmental Award, PMIEA” from the Philippine Department of Environment and Natural Resources. This is the second consecutive year that CBNC and THPAL have recieved the award at the same time. And this is the seventh time CBNC has received the award and the second time THPAL has.

This award was given to our subsidiaries in the metal smelting and refining category recognizing the environment management and safety management at plants, protection of the local environment, and contributions to local communities. Along with PMIEA, CBNC received the “Safest Mineral Processing - Extraction Plant,” with THPAL coming in as the runner-up. Additionally, in the “Best Mining Forest Contest, Mineral Processing Plant Category” THPAL took the top spot and CBNC took the third spot.

PMIEA is the highest honor that can be awarded in the Philippine mining industry. This award is given to CBNC and THPAL in recognition of their continuing operations in the Philippines that give consideration to both safety and the environment. Moving forward, CBNC and THPAL will continue to strive to operate in a socially responsible manner by contributing to the surrounding area through building infrastructure for local communities, increasing employment, and sourcing materials locally alongside other such actions as well as operating with the minimum environmental impact, preventing environmental accidents, restoring the ecosystem by greening tailings dams created by CBNC, and preserving biodiversity.
