Social Contribution Activities through the Sumitomo Foundation

The Besshi Copper Mine in Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture, where our main factories are concentrated, supported a part of the Japanese economy for over 280 years from its discovery in 1690 until its mission ended in 1973. It served as the source of various Sumitomo Group businesses.

The Sumitomo Foundation was established in 1991 by various Sumitomo Group companies as part of a project commemorating the 300th anniversary of the opening of the Besshi Copper Mine. Since then, the foundation has been providing grants amounting to several hundred million yen annually for research in basic science and environmental fields, as well as for the maintenance and restoration of cultural properties. Our company continues to support the foundation as one of its founding members.

The Besshi Copper Mine still lives on as a green forest symbolizing the Sumitomo Group's business spirit of "benefitting oneself and others, public and private interests as one." As a company that directly inherits the history of the Besshi Copper Mine, we will continue to support the foundation and engage in social contribution activities with a primary focus on coexistence and mutual prosperity with society.
