Sumitomo Metal Mining Group’s Nature Policy
1. Context
Sumitomo Metal Mining Co., Ltd. and its subsidiaries (hereinafter the “SMM Group” or “we”) recognizes that the natural environment, which is the foundation of human health, welfare, and the economy, is deteriorating worldwide, and that biodiversity is decreasing at an unprecedented rate. The SMM Group’s business activities depend on nature through a global value chain extending both upstream and downstream. Therefore, the SMM Group has a responsibility to avoid or minimize the negative impacts of its business activities on nature and contribute to the sustainable development of society through restoration and conservation work.
This Nature Policy is consistent with the Sumitomo Metal Mining Group Sustainability Policy and the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM) Nature Position Statement, and guides our commitment to nature.
2. Scope
This policy applies to the entirety of the SMM Group’s business and all executives and employees of the SMM Group.
3. Governance and Promotional Framework
The executive officer in charge of the Safety & Environment Control Department, which oversees the Nature Conservation and Restoration Subcommittee, a subcommittee of the Sustainability Committee, will report regularly to the Sustainability Committee, which is overseen by the Board of Directors, on the status of compliance with this policy. The executive officer will also provide information to the Board of Directors regarding nature-related dependencies, impacts, risks, and opportunities across direct operations and the entire upstream and downstream value chain and promote nature-related initiatives.
4. Nature Policy Principles
- We will assess dependencies and impacts on nature, risks, and opportunities related to the business and its value chain, and identify priority locations.
- We will promote initiatives aiming to achieve no net loss of nature in priority locations and disclose the progress of those initiatives.
- We will work with stakeholders to contribute to a nature positive future in the value chain, related regional ecosystems (landscapes), and a wide range of systems within and outside the industry.
- We will integrate consideration for nature into our operational decisions. We will not conduct exploration and mining at UNESCO World Heritage sites, and we will work to conserve them and to manage nature sustainably.
- Recognizing that the participation of local residents and indigenous peoples is essential to our nature-related efforts, we respect the rights, values, and knowledge of our stakeholders in accordance with the SMM Group Policy on Human Rights.
5. Review and Reporting
This Nature Policy will be reviewed periodically, and any changes will be approved by the Board of Directors.
